Pascal Mimero, Lyon FR: UKA, the Uniwersytecka Komisja Akredytacyjna (www.uka.amu.edu.pl), one of the four accreditation partners operating on behalf of ECTNA for the Eurolabels accreditation in their own country, has started its activity. The 4 first Polish universities were awarded with both the Eurobachelor® and Euromaster® Labels. Welcome to them in the Network of Quality Eurolabels in Chemistry awarded Institutions.
Pascal Mimero, Lyon FR: The 2008 updated Guidelines for applicants for both Labels, are now published online in the "Documentation" section ready for download in both Microsoft Word and Acrobat PDF formats; previous versions are withdrawn. Complementary documentations in the same area will also be updated soon to integrate the most recent modifications implemented in the Guidelines.

Working Groups, Activity Reports |

Arne van der Gen, Leiden NL (E.U.) - October 6, 2008: The activities of the Working Group on Biological Chemistry are focussed on the development of the relating part of the EChemTest. The number of questions available in January 2008 was 2008. Since then, much progress has been made, in particular during two sessions of a sub-group (4 people with 2 travelling) including our IT expert in Helsinki. Many questions were put in the right form to be included in the EChemTest. Also, a DEMO was prepared, in time for display at the Meeting of the General Assembly in Helsinki in May 2008. The number of questions is now approaching the 300 mark, which is considered to be the minimum for the test to become operative. However, the questions are not equally divided over the 10 Libraries and the 3 levels (easy, intermediate, advanced) in each library. Weak spots were identified during a meeting of the working group during the Plenary in Helsinki. The Working Group is now concentrating on strengthening these. The next meeting of the Working Group will be held during the next ECTN Plenary Meeting in April 2009 in Poznan.

Anthony Smith, Lyon FR, October 10, 2008: PhD thesis in Lyon in the laboratory of surface organometallic chemistry (Director J.M. BASSET)
This thesis is immediately available as a Pierre and Marie Curie fellowship and the student has to spend at least 1 month/year in another laboratory of the “Nanohost” network partners. The salary is very attractive and at a level decided by the European Training Networks regulations.
The objective of this network is related to Green chemistry:
“Homogeneous supported catalyst technologies, development of a sustainable approach to highly selective fine chemicals production”.
The particular subject of this thesis (supervisor F. Lefebvre) is the grafting and full characterization of heteropolyacids on various porous supports and their catalytic properties towards oxidation of paraffins.
The laboratory is working with many industrial companies (Europeans and Americans) and the students find easily a job after their thesis.
The training will occur within both:
- The laboratory ( highly sophisticated NMR, IR, TPD, Catalytic tests under pressure,… )
- Inside the nano-host network (12 participants from all over Europe and 3 companies) and
- Inside the IDECAT network (40 laboratories, 20 companies ).

Farok Fahmy, Cairo, Egypt (Africa) and J.J. Lagowski, Austin TX USA (N.America), July 31, 2008: We are pleased to be able to announce the availability of the official Systemic Approach to Teaching and Learning (SATL) website; the website is called "SATL Central" [www.satlcentral.com] . As many of you may know, SATL techniques have been successfully applied to a wide spectrum of disciplines, and those reports have been published in a number of places, some of which may not readily be available. This SATL website incorporates a database of such reports that could be useful to colleagues of Yahoo Group. We should appreciate receiving notice you may find and any contribution in the area of SATL and its applications.
